United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said this Thursday in New York, USA, that there is a need for unity between the various fronts of support for the Turkish and Syrian populations that have been held hostage by the effects of the earthquakes. .
“This is an epic disaster, so the goal is to find ways to increase aid,” Guterres said.
The UN Secretary General emphasized the solidarity shown by Turkey over the past few years regarding the reception of refugees. “It is home to the largest number of refugees in the world, and it has always shown a unique solidarity with neighboring peoples, as is the case in Syria,” he explained.
“The epicenter of solidarity has now become the epicenter of suffering,” he stressed.
António Guterres said the organization had sent disaster experts and rescue teams to affected countries and was keen to emphasize that now is not the time to treat the issue as a “political issue”.
Syria, which has been in internal conflict for more than a decade, has more conditional access than Turkey, and in this sense, António Guterres refers to the fact that the UN, like other non-governmental organizations, is working on a reaction to help the Syrian population. .
“Remember, people come first,” Guterres said.
This Monday in the south of Turkey and in the north of Syria there were two earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.6, respectively. The earthquakes were followed by dozens of aftershocks that exacerbated the trail of destruction in the countries.
The latest balance points to more than 19,000 dead and tens of thousands injured, making this the biggest quake of the century in these countries.
