Julian Assange’s wife euphoric over release

Stella Assange said on Tuesday she was “euphoric” at the prospect of the release of her husband and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after agreeing with the North American justice system, which wanted to try him for espionage.

“It’s a whirlwind of emotions, I’m just euphoric, it’s just incredible to be honest. It feels unreal,” she told BBC public radio.

The activist and lawyer said the situation is very uncertain and that they weren’t sure what would happen until the last 24 hours.

On Tuesday morning it was announced that Julian Assange left Belmarsh maximum security prison in London, where he has been held for five years, on Monday morning and boarded a plane at Stansted Airport.

Assange is scheduled to appear in federal court in the Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean, according to court documents filed Monday evening.

The founder of Wikileaks is pleading guilty to conspiracy to unlawfully obtain and disclose confidential information related to U.S. national defense, a plea that must be approved by a judge.

After this, 52-year-old Australian citizen Julian Assange will be able to return to Australia.

Stella Assange said that “an agreement in principle between Julian and the Department of Justice must be signed by a judge in the Mariana Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, where he is traveling,” currently staying in Bangkok.

“As soon as the judge signs, the act becomes formally valid,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, Stella Assange and the couple’s two children, aged five and seven, traveled on Sunday to Sydney, Australia, where they hope to reunite with Julian Assange.

The children met their father only inside the prison.

When asked about the future, the woman said that “the priority now is to get Julian healthy again.”

“He was able [de saúde] terrible for a five year old and you just need to be in touch with nature. This is what we both want now. Have time and privacy and start this new chapter,” he said.

Assange has been held in Belmarsh, in the east of the British capital, since 2019, when he fought an extradition request from the United States, which charged him with 18 crimes of espionage and computer hacking for leaking confidential documents to WikiLeaks. portal.

Washington wanted to try Assange for leaking more than 700,000 secret documents, and US authorities charged him under the Espionage Act of 1917 and faced up to 175 years in prison.

On May 20, the High Court of London upheld Assange’s appeal, the hearing of which was scheduled for early July.
