Portugal’s Patricia Mamona, silver medalist in the triple jump at Tokyo 2020, will miss the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after failing to compete at the minimum level, the president of the Portuguese Athletics Federation (FPA) has confirmed.
“There have been no competitions recently. Obviously, he did not train at the best level, and, unfortunately, what we already predicted is confirmed,” Jorge Vieira complained in a conversation with the Lusa agency.
Patricia Mamona, 35, was expected to reach the qualifying mark by the end of June, with the national championships at the weekend being the last chance, but the Sporting athlete is not even registered.
“This, unfortunately, is what we expected. But nothing can be done, that’s the way it is, sport is like that too. Life for athletes never gets 100% easier. They always have to overcome some obstacles, and some are impossible to overcome.” and this is one of them,” said Jorge Vieira.
The FPA president says the absence of Patricia Mamona will be a serious loss for the Portuguese delegation at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, which will take place from July 26 to August 11.
“She is an Olympic medalist, she is an athlete who has reached a very high level. For us, she has always been a vital athlete in our international representation. So it’s confirmation, but it always affects us. This is sad “First of all for the athlete, for your coach, for your club, but also for athletics this is an important mistake,” he said.
