French basketball player Victor Wembanyama, a new figure in the NBA, joined footballer Mbappe this Thursday in calling for a vote without “extremes” in the July 7 elections, a reference to the right-wing ultranationalists who are the favorites in the legislative elections.
“Political decisions are individual, but I believe it is important to vote away from extremes that are not suitable for governing a country like ours,” he said during a public event in Paris.
The son of a Congolese, Wembanyama, the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year for the San Antonio Spurs, is referring to Marine Le Pen’s National Front, the ultra-nationalist party that won France’s European elections and wants to implement several anti-immigrant measures, making it the clear favorite to control the National Assembly and the new Popular Left Front.
Kylian Mbappe, the son of a Cameroonian father and an Algerian mother, is the “captain” of France’s Euro 2024 football team and on June 16 he also warned his countrymen of a “defining moment” in the country’s history.
“I think we are living through a decisive moment in the history of our country. The situation is unprecedented, so I appeal to the French and the young generation who can make a difference. I call on young people to vote, we see that extremists are at the door of power, we have the opportunity to choose the future of our country,” said the most emblematic French footballer of our time, who defended the values of “tolerance, diversity and respect.”
