The Portuguese Betting and Online Gaming Association (APAJO) has filed criminal charges against “influencers” who promoted illegal gambling on social media to millions of followers and operators.
“In recent days, APAJO has filed criminal complaints against several content producers who generally promoted illegal gambling via social media to an audience of several million followers, as well as online gambling operators without a license to operate in Portugal,” he said in a statement.
The content producers in question are ritinhayoutuber, GODMOTA and Bruno Savate, who promoted illegal gambling sites that were reported and prosecuted.
The same thing happened with Numeiro, who was also the subject of a complaint at the end of 2023, which has now been supplemented, and with Claudia Nayara at the beginning of 2024.
According to the association, these people promoted unlicensed operators through affiliate links and made a profit from this activity.
APAJO reported that the list of operators against whom criminal cases have been opened by the prosecutor’s office, which already included Vem Apostar!, now includes Betify, Monro, Weiss, BC Game, Stake, Wolfi and Starda.
“Each of them is in an illegal position and cannot operate in Portugal due to the lack of a license,” he stressed.
In total, ritinhayoutuber, GODMOTA, Bruno Savate, Claudia Nayara and Numeiro promoted illegal gambling to 2.8 million subscribers.
“The fight against illegal online gambling through the courts and other bodies must be a priority, and the licensed sector wants to highlight the importance of this issue, which has been largely ignored so far. Illegal operators are likely to expose hundreds of thousands of people to risks that are accessible even to minors, “without any security guarantees,” noted APAJO President Ricardo Dominguez, quoted in the same note.
On the other hand, he said that these operators are liable for losses of at least 100 million euros in taxes, stressing that illegal gambling “is an epidemic that must be extinguished.”
