Two-fifths of Portuguese online gamers use illegal platforms (with the trend growing among young people), but less than half are aware of the choice.
According to a study by APAJO (Portuguese Betting and Online Gaming Association), 56.4% of players use exclusively licensed platforms, 41% use legal and illegal gaming platforms, and the remaining 2.6% use only unlicensed services.
In the age groups 18 to 24 and 25 to 34, the number of players who use only legal games is lower (52.1%).
The study, which was the result of a survey of thousands of people, also shows that only 37.7% of people playing on illegal platforms are aware of it.
The rest say they do not use illegal sites or do not know whether they use them. Recall that APAJO has already published an estimate indicating that the loss of state tax revenues related to gambling and illegal online betting amounts to about 100 million euros.
However, according to a study published today, the majority of players in Portugal (71.5%) spend up to €50 per month on online gaming and betting. However, the largest percentage (42.2%) spend less than €25 per month.
In terms of gambling frequency, 82% of players place bets once a week or less. It is worth noting here that the latest available official data shows that the state collected 86.2 million euros in tax revenue from online gambling in the first three months of this year.
This amount is 36.6% higher than the amount received from the same tax in the first three months of last year.
