Navy carries out 90-hour mission to track Russian spy ships

Two Portuguese Navy ocean patrol vessels completed a 90-hour mission Friday to escort Russian vessels transiting Portuguese territorial waters. In the first, the Figueira da Foz closely followed the General Skobelev and Academician Ioffe in the continent’s exclusive economic zone. At almost the same time, the Sines closely followed the tug Nikolai Chiker as it passed through the Azores exclusive economic zone.

The operation was monitored by the Center for Maritime Operations (COMAR), which the Navy said “maintains constant situational awareness of Russian ships” and that these actions “guarantee the defense and security of national maritime spaces.”
