Chega asks to suspend the meeting until all police officers enter the AR

This Thursday, Parliament is debating proposals to supplement police missions. The debate was scheduled by Chega, which proposes a single mission supplement for the PSP, GNR and prison guards, paid monthly in 14 instalments and indexed to 19.6% of the salary of the PSP national director and the general commander of the GNR.

During the opening of the debate, Chega leader André Ventura apologised to the police for the way they had been treated and said that “the police don’t want cents, they want dignity.”

“We have come to correct a historical injustice,” said Andre Ventura.

Shortly after André Ventura’s speech, several deputies spoke of long lines of police officers waiting to enter the Assembly of the Republic to attend the debate. The parties exchanged accusations, with Aguiar Branco stating that “there is no special situation at the entrance to the galleries compared to any other normal day.”

Several police officers shout “shame” as they wait to enter.

The PCP’s António Filipe criticised the former Socialist government, saying that “the increase in the PJ subsidy was a fair measure that created injustice.”

PCP proposes to set the surcharge at €200 this year, increasing it to €300 in January 2025 and increasing it to €450 in January 2026.

Ines Souza Real presented a PAN proposal that proposes a risk premium divided into three categories: 10% for officers, 12% for chiefs and sergeants, and 15% for agents and guards. The value should be calculated based on the salary of the national director of the PSP and the general commander of the GNR.

The deputy recalled that “professionals do not need political figures made on their knees, but proposals made with their feet and heads.”

Andre Ventura mentioned the possibility of suspending the plenary until everyone had entered.

Fabian Figueiredo from BE believes that “working for the state cannot be just sweat and a uniform, it must be a decent salary and time to live.”

Nuno Gabriel do Chega accused BE of “going hand in hand with banditry” and asked Mariana Mortágua to “be ashamed of the way she talks about the police.”
