IL legislative proposals fail again

Two proposals to change the statute, submitted by the National Council and the internal opposition, were rejected this Saturday in a second vote at the IL National Congress, resulting in the party retaining its current statute.

On the second vote, both proposals again failed to secure the two-thirds supermajority needed for approval.

As a result, the first day’s work ended early, since after dinner it was planned to discuss and vote on the proposed amendments to the approved text.

In the second vote, according to the results announced by the board of the VIII National Congress of the IL, the proposal affecting governance received 319 votes in favor, 144 against, 51 abstentions and 28 not cast votes, that is, 58.86%, which did not allow it to obtain the two-thirds necessary for its approval.

The “Statutes + Liberals” proposal, supported by the internal opposition, including IL founder Miguel Ferreira da Silva and former presidential candidate Tiago Maião Gonçalves, received 55 votes in favor (28.60%), 318 votes against, 51 abstentions and 18 votes against.

The main meeting ends on Sunday in Santa Maria da Feira (Aveiro) with a discussion of the political programme and a closing speech by party chairman Rui Rocha.
