Livre spokesman Rui Tavares said today that the PS had agreed to meet with his party to think about future rapprochement between the left, but the meeting does not yet have a fixed date and is not expected to bring news of possible alliances for local authorities.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with PAN at Livre headquarters to analyse the political situation and reflect on the 2025 local elections, Rui Tavares confirmed that the Socialists have already responded to their party’s call and that, although the date has not yet been set, it will be carried out “within a short time”.
Rui Tavares stressed that, although the “political and even journalistic commentary” of these meetings is municipal, these meetings also serve “to assess the political situation in Portugal and Europe.”
“There are important news that we must evaluate and that we will certainly evaluate in future meetings, such as the victory of the new Popular Front in France, which we interpret as very positive, as a sign of hope for European policy,” he said. This was stated by a representative of Livre.
The deputy added that it is not yet possible to “foresee anything regarding local authorities” not only because the meetings have not yet taken place, but also because “even after these meetings” there should be no news.
The meeting between PAN and Livre on Tuesday was the second of four meetings between Rui Tavares’ party and left-wing parties, with the PCP still to meet (which will take place next Monday, the 15th) and the PS, the date of which has not yet been agreed.
After meeting with the Bloc de Esquerda, Livre and the blocs showed their willingness to move closer to the left in local elections next year, including in Lisbon, in order to defeat the current leader of the PSD/CDU-PP, led by Carlos Moedas.
On the part of the PCP, which has not yet met with Livre, the door to any municipal rapprochement with the PS is already closed.
