Missing fishermen in San Pedro de Moel trapped in fish cages.

Three fishermen missing since the trawler Virgem Dolorosa sank off Samuco Beach in Marinha Grande were found trapped under fish tanks on Wednesday. After seven days of searching, the bodies were recovered by a private diving team conducting salvage operations.

The first two bodies were discovered at 1pm, and divers immediately decided to resume the search for the sunken trawler in order to find the last missing person.

The bodies were transferred to a support vessel for divers and then taken to the port of Nazaré, where they were received by local firefighters and Alcobaça volunteers, who took them to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Leiria, where they will undergo an autopsy.

On the day of the sinking, the trawler Virgem Dolorosa with 17 crew members was about one nautical mile from the shore when it suffered an accident, the causes of which are still unclear, and sank. The situation was witnessed by a nearby vessel, which alerted the authorities. Of the crew, six were killed and 11 were injured, one of them seriously, and is currently in hospital. A marine police psychologist is accompanying the family members on reconnaissance.

All the castaways from the Virgema Dolorosa were natives or residents of Leirosa. The fishermen who died were José García, Joel Reboca, Jorge Evangelista, Eugenio Pata, Felipe Julian and José Jacinto.

SEARCH FOR DIVERS AND DRONES

Last week, the “Virgin of Sorrows” was the subject of a search by several teams of divers and a drone, who were unable to locate the fishermen. It was not until the seventh day that the victims were located.
