The government has decided to replace the old food basket with a social card that will cover 120,000 people, with the aim of giving “greater freedom and dignity to the families most in need,” the guardianship agency said on Friday.
The Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security (MTSSS) announced in a statement that the Social Card will contain the cost of support for the final beneficiaries of the social card program, as defined in the government decree of July 9 this year, of which 50.95 euros are allocated to the person responsible for the household, plus 70% of this amount (35.67 euros) for each of the other members of the household, including minors.
The social card, which will be delivered in the last quarter of the year, “will allow the neediest families to choose the food products they prefer, thereby reducing the risk of social stigmatization.”
According to the MTSSS, the holder can purchase the food products he needs in the network of retail establishments participating in the program, which exists throughout the continental territory.
The social card will be delivered to beneficiaries of the food basket, selected by local institutions that support those most in need, a measure that, according to the ministry, “follows the logic of subsidiarity, which is the hallmark of this government.”
