“When I first saw these shoes, I said, ‘No.’ ‘I can’t run in them.’ That was the first impression of Hellen Obiri, a runner who has already won two Olympic medals. In 2024, she will make history, even if she doesn’t win, thanks to her shoes.
While it wasn’t love at first sight, once she put on the shoes, which were made using spray paint by a robot, in just six minutes, the athlete was delighted.
“I didn’t want to return them,” says one of the directors of the company “On”, which produces these shoes, when The newspaper “New York Times.
To make the sneakers, a mold is placed in the robot and the upper part of the shoe is sprayed with a spray gun in just three minutes. The procedure is then repeated for the rest of the surface before painting.
The spray releases thermoplastic polyurethane, a material with characteristics similar to plastic and rubber.
“The way sneakers are made today is not very modern. It just uses 2D patterns,” another On director said of the new revolutionary technology.
Obiri reports that her colleagues thought she was joking and that she would never run a marathon in those shoes. The runner debuted the shoes at the famous Boston Marathon… which she ended up winning.
“When you trust your shoes, you have the mentality to win,” Obiri shared.
In addition to cutting production time, the company claims that such production reduces carbon emissions by 75%. The sneakers cost more than 300 euros.
