Carlos Abreu Amorim to oversee social communications

The current Undersecretary of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Carlos Abreu Amorim, has been chosen by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Pedro Duarte, to oversee social communications. Thus, according to the diploma published on Tuesday in the newspaper “Diário da República”, he will be responsible for RTP, Luso, the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts, as well as the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in matters related to the media. Carlos Abreu Amorim will have an action plan to support social communications, which should be completed by the end of the year, as proposed by Pedro Duarte in June.

Regarding Lusa, the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs stated that the purchase of shares belonging to Global Media Group (GMG) is a priority. However, the state must pay a fair price. Regarding RTP, the government intends to maintain its role, and the Minister has already stated that this is for the future and guarantees “independence and transparency.”

Carlos Abreu Amorim is 60 years old, holds a PhD in Law and is a university professor. In his political life, he was a PSD deputy in the XI and XII Legislative Assemblies (from 2011 to 2019) and vice-president of the PSD parliamentary group, during the leadership of the parliamentary group of Luís Montenegro and Hugo Soares, leaving the position when it became incompatible with Rui Rio when he assumed the presidency of the PSD. In his life outside politics, his harsh statements are known on social networks, where he even called André Ventura a “hooligan” in relation to the controversy in which Chega was involved in the election of Aguiar-Branco as president of the parliament.
