‘Avalanche of outrage’ over video of tourist simulating sex with Roman god in Florence

A video of a tourist simulating sex with a statue of the god Bacchus in Florence, Italy, went viral this week. The images show a young woman hugging and kissing the god of wine and partying, as well as striking sexually suggestive poses.

The post caused an “avalanche of indignation” on social networks. Although some internet users downplayed the situation, there were those who considered the woman’s behavior an offense against property, requiring criminal liability. According to the newspaper Corriere Fiorentino, there are those who even call for the young woman to be banned from entering the city..

The life-size statue stands on a street corner near the famous Ponte Vecchio. It is a modern copy of the work of the 16th-century sculptor Giambologna. The original is in the Bargello Museum, which is located nearby.

Italian architect Antonella Ranaldi spoke out about the incident, criticizing the young woman’s attitude and the devaluation of art and heritage. “Tourists are welcome, but there must be respect for our monuments, whether originals or copies. Especially since I doubt that this lady, who incurs my disapproval, understands the difference,” he wrote.

Patrizia Asproni, president of the Confcultura Foundation, is even more blunt: “Florence is a city that is not respected by visitors. These constant displays of ignorance and impoliteness are due to the fact that everyone feels entitled to do what they want with impunity. The ‘Singapore model’: strict controls, large fines, zero tolerance,” he notes.
