Mariana Mortagua accuses Azores government of violating equality principle

The coordinator of Bloco de Esquerda (BE) accused the Azores government this Saturday of violating the principle of equality by putting the children of the unemployed at the end of the queue for access to public kindergartens.

“This is a violation of the principle of equality enshrined in the Constitution,” said Mariana Mortagua, adding that the party structure of the autonomous region will refer the matter to the representative office of the president of the republic in the Azores.

The leader said she hoped a veto or pre-emptive review could be applied depending on how the legislation was published.

Speaking to journalists in Amarante, Porto district, while attending the Mimo festival, the BE leader stressed that “the right-wing coalition that governs the Azores has endorsed Chega’s proposal that the children of the unemployed be the last in line to have access to free kindergarten.”

For Mariana Mortagua, it’s a “good example” of how the right governs.

“The right believes that the poorest people, the children of the poorest people, do not have the same rights as other people’s children,” he said, criticizing the fact that the issue “is not even about discriminating against people based on their working conditions.”

“We’re talking about children,” he exclaimed.

On 12 July, the Regional Assembly approved, with the votes of Chegi, PSD, CDS-PP, PPM and IL abstentions, Chegi’s draft resolution, which recommends that the Azores Regional Government change the rules for admission to kindergartens, giving priority to children of working parents.
