‘We live in fear’: Porto population unsafe due to daily thefts from parked cars

The thefts happen at night, almost every day, on the streets of Silva Porto and Nove de Abril in Porto. “It’s a disaster. As for the robberies, they always continue. One night they stole 13 cars. The PSP knows who the suspects are, but they say they will have to catch them red-handed, but to do that they will have to come here, which is not happening,” says José.

The residents are all very scared. “I’m worried about my family who live here,” says Andre Pinto. “It’s not easy. I’m afraid for my family, not so much for myself,” says Andreja, who emigrated to Germany. “I was never scared there. Unlike what’s happening here. I was robbed on the second day of my holiday in Portugal,” she stressed.

Last week, 13 cars were stolen. “My house has been robbed three times. It’s a scam. I don’t know how this situation will end. We live in fear. Let the PSP help us, please, Bom Pastor. Or the council, President Rui Moreira, install cameras here,” says António Pinto, another resident.

“It’s sad for people who work to come home and have an empty car. We met him twice with the doors open and without a radio,” Liliana describes. “We are never safe. I have never seen so many crimes as now,” Maria Leonilde assures.

The rest of the residents move on. “I became afraid to live in Porto, afraid to walk down the street, afraid to leave the house and become a victim of more robberies,” Anabela said.
