Driver Who Killed Portuguese Woman, Her Family at San Francisco Bus Stop Charged with Manslaughter

The elderly driver who caused the death of a Portuguese woman and her family in San Francisco, USA, was charged by the district attorney in March with four counts of manslaughter, according to the newspaper San Francisco StandardAn arrest warrant for Mary Fong Lau was issued this month after investigators determined the crash was not the result of technical failure or incapacity, but rather “serious negligence.”

“This is not someone who was going a few miles over the speed limit. This was excessive speed and unsafe driving that could have predictably resulted in death,” said San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.

The whole family died

The tragic accident occurred on March 16 while the family was traveling to the zoo and waiting at a bus stop in West Portal, at Ulloa Street and Lennox Way. Matilda Ramos Pinto38 years old, Portuguese, Diego Cardoso de OliveiraA 40-year-old Brazilian man and his two infant children were killed when an elderly woman’s car collided with him at a bus stop.

Matilde Ramos Pinto’s husband and eldest son died on the spot, and the Portuguese woman and her two-month-old child were hospitalized. The mother died of her injuries the following day, and the child on March 20.

Following the crash, Mary Fong Lau was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, careless driving, careless driving causing bodily harm, driving the wrong way on a divided road, and driving at an unsafe speed. According to eyewitnesses, the woman was driving between 80 and 110 kilometers per hour in the wrong direction. However, in the following weeks, the prosecutor did not press charges as the investigation continued.

Portuguese Man Lives American Dream

Matilde Ramos Pinto, a 38-year-old producer, was in the United States living the “American dream.” At 18, he left Portugal and went to London to try his luck in the world of acting. Shortly before the tragedy, he joined the team at RSA FILMS US, an executive film company in Los Angeles.
