The whole family died
The tragic accident occurred on March 16 while the family was traveling to the zoo and waiting at a bus stop in West Portal, at Ulloa Street and Lennox Way. Matilde Ramos Pinto’s husband and eldest son died on the spot, and the Portuguese woman and her two-month-old child were hospitalized. The mother died of her injuries the following day, and the child on March 20.
Following the crash, Mary Fong Lau was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, careless driving, careless driving causing bodily harm, driving the wrong way on a divided road, and driving at an unsafe speed. According to eyewitnesses, the woman was driving between 80 and 110 kilometers per hour in the wrong direction. However, in the following weeks, the prosecutor did not press charges as the investigation continued.
