Maria Ines de Barros is eighth on the first day of Olympic qualifying.

Portuguese shooter Maria Ines de Barros was eighth on Tuesday on the first day of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, just one shot away from sixth place, the last to reach the final.

In a typical performance, the reigning European champion scored 24 points in each of the three rounds played on Tuesday for a total of 72 points, the same as seventh-placed China’s Wu Cuikui and just one shot behind the quartet of shooters in third and sixth place.

On the second day of qualifying, Maria Ines de Barros, the first Portuguese woman to take part in this Olympic pit lane race, will compete from 9am on Wednesday in two more rounds before she reaches the final scheduled for 3.30pm that same day, the first six.

The competition is led by Spain’s Mar Molne Magrina, who made a total of 25 throws in three rounds, for a total of 75.
