Marcelo leaves open the question of whether he would respond to CPI in the case of twins.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said that he will wait until the work of the Parliamentary Commissions of Inquiry (CPI) on the Portuguese-Brazilian twins case is completed to decide whether to speak out again on the issue. The letter that the head of state sent to the Assembly of the Republic was published on the presidential website.

“Since it is known that a large number of citizens will still be heard, the President of the Republic, who has already spoken publicly on the matter, reserves his decision on a new statement for a moment after all the testimony in order to consider whether there is any material to justify it,” the document says.

Twins of Portuguese-Brazilian descent suffer from spinal muscular atrophy and are being treated with the drug. Zolgensma costing two million euros per person at Santa Maria Hospital. The case was controversial because Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, Marcelo’s son, had asked government agencies to help the children get treatment in Portugal.
