Portugal’s Filipa Martins today took a historic 20th place in the all-around final in artistic gymnastics at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, while North American Simone Biles became champion for the second time.
Becoming the first Portuguese woman to reach the full competition final, the Acro Clube da Maia gymnast finished the competition with 51,232 points, thanks to 12,700 points on balance beam, 12,466 points on floor, 12,500 points on vault and 13,566 points on asymmetric parallel bars.
Filipa Martins, 28, finished 37th at Rio 2016 (by far the nation’s best ever result) and 43rd at Tokyo 2020, and was the first and only Portuguese woman to reach the World Cup apparatus final in the asymmetric parallel events (eighth place), in Kitakyushu in 2021, when he also competed in the all-around final for the first time (seventh place), and repeated the feat in Antwerp 2023 (21st place).
