North American Simone Biles became the overall Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics at the 2024 Paris Games today, repeating her triumph at Rio 2016 by winning her sixth gold medal.
At the Arena de Bercy, Simone Biles scored 59.131 to beat Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade (57.932), who repeated her silver from Tokyo 2020, and her compatriot Sunisa Lee (56.465), who defended her Olympic title with a score of 59.131. Portugal’s Filipa Martins finished 20th.
At age 27, Biles won her sixth Olympic gold medal, her second in Paris when the North Americans won the team event, to which she adds a silver and two bronzes won at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 for a total of nine.
Simone Biles, who became the first gymnast to win non-consecutive all-around titles, scored 15.766 on vault, 13.733 on bars, 14.566 on balance beam and 15.066 on floor.
With her sixth gold, Simone Biles isolated herself in third place on the list of champions, just behind Czech Vera Caslavska (seven) and Russia’s Larisa Latynina (nine).
Simone Biles, forced to withdraw from some events at Tokyo 2020 for mental health reasons, today contributed to extending North America’s dominance in women’s all-around events, begun in Athens in 2004 by Carly Paterson.
In 2008, Nastia Liukin won the full competition, followed by compatriots Gabby Douglas in London 2012, Simone Biles at the Games in Brazil and Sunisa Lee three years ago in Tokyo.
