The U.S. Olympic gymnastics team’s victories in Paris have highlighted the “gaffes” of Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance that Democrats are promising to exploit in the election campaign.
As American gymnast Simone Biles won her second gold medal at the Paris Olympics this week, Democrats went into the memory lane to retrieve a statement from Vance in which the Republican candidate criticized the athlete for citing her mental health to withdraw from the 2020 Olympics.
“I think it reflects very poorly on our type of society that we try to praise people not for their moments of strength, not for their moments of heroism, but for their moments of weakness,” Vance said in a televised statement when he was running for president at the time.
