On Monday, the Portuguese team was eliminated in the first round of the men’s team table tennis tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, losing 3-1 to Brazil.
In the doubles match, Marcos Freitas (ranked 17th in the world) and Thiago Apolonia (ranked 65th) lost to Brazilians Vitor Ixia (ranked 85th) and Guilherme Teodoro (ranked 122nd) with a score of 3-2 with partial scores of 12-10, 11-9, 7-11, 8-11 and 12-10.
World No. 6 Hugo Calderano, a semi-finalist in the individual tournament, extended Brazil’s lead by beating 70th-ranked João Geraldo 3-0 (12-10, 11-5 and 11-7), while Marcos Freitas followed up with a 3-0 (11-7, 12-10 and 11-4) win over Guilherme Teodoro.
In the fourth match, Geraldo lost to Ishii with the scores 3–2, 14–12, 8–11, 8–11, 11–9 and 14–12, with Portugal failing to repeat its presence in the quarter-finals of the team tournament, its best result in the Olympic Games achieved in London 2012.
