Heatwave warning extended until Saturday afternoon

This Thursday, high temperatures remain at yellow alert in most parts of mainland Portugal, with five counties upgrading to orange on Friday.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) extended the orange alert for Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real and Castelo Branco until the end of the day on Saturday. However, the notice will not come into effect until 9am on Friday.

Until then, these areas remain under yellow alert, as are areas in Évora, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Beja, Portalegre and Braga.

Starting from Friday, the areas of Setubal, Santarem, Aveiro and Coimbra will also be under yellow alert.

Only the areas of Lisbon, Leiria and Faro are without warning these days.

An orange alert is issued by IPMA when a moderate to high risk meteorological situation has arisen. A yellow alert is issued when a risk situation has arisen when carrying out certain activities depending on weather conditions.

This Thursday, light to clear skies, light to moderate winds and a slight increase in maximum temperatures are expected in the interior of the North and Central regions.

Bragança and Castelo Branco will be the hottest areas with temperatures of 37 degrees Celsius, while Aveiro will be the coolest with temperatures expected at 24 degrees.

Temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees in some inland areas of the country on Saturday.
