American sprinter Noah Lyles, who finished third in the 200m final, tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday after running that distance at the 2024 Paris Olympics under certain conditions after winning gold in the 100m.
“We can confirm that Noah Lyles tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, August 6. The USOC and the Federation quickly put the necessary protocols in place to protect his health, the well-being of the team, and the safety of everyone involved,” USA Track and Field said in a statement.
According to the document, the athlete “decided to compete after undergoing a comprehensive medical examination” after winning a bronze medal in the final, which was won by Letsile Tebogo of Botswana.
The 27-year-old sprinter had already won the Olympic 100m title, two days before testing positive for the novel coronavirus, on his Olympic debut, and was the clear favourite today in his favourite distance, where he is a three-time world champion who took the final spot on the podium.
Next on the table is the sprinter’s participation in the 4x100m final on Friday after the United States, without Lyles, qualified in 37.47 seconds today.
