Inconsolable. This was Fernando Pimenta after the K1 1000m final, in which he failed to reach the podium after spending almost the entire race in first place.
The canoeist from Ponte de Lima finished sixth and missed out on the opportunity to make history by becoming the first Portuguese man ever to win three Olympic medals.
At the Stade Nautico de Vayre-sur-Marne, Pimenta finished the final in 3.29.59 minutes, 5.52 seconds behind the new Olympic champion, Czech Josef Dostal (March 24, 2007), failing to win his third Olympic medal after silver in the K2 1000 with Emanuel Silva in London 2012 and bronze in the K1 1000 at Tokyo 2020.
The podium was completed by two Hungarians: Adam Varga (3.24.76) won silver and Balint Kopas (3.25.68) won bronze.
