North American gymnast Jordan Chiles will have to hand over the bronze medal he won in the singles final at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games to Romanian Ana Barbosa following a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday.
The Olympic body’s decision came after the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said it would implement the TAS decision, which ruled in Barbosa’s favour, handing over responsibility for rectifying the medal awards to the IOC.
During the apparatus final on Monday, Barbosa secured the third-best result on floor exercise (13.700 points) and, therefore, the bronze medal, behind Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade (14.166) and North American Simone Biles (14.133), who won three golds in the French capital.
As the Romanian was celebrating her victory, North American Jordan Chiles filed a protest over her initial score of 13.666, which dropped her to fifth place. The judges accepted the complaint and gave her a score of 13.766, earning her the bronze medal.
The Romanian team appealed to TAS, arguing that Chiles’ complaint was filed outside the time limit allowed by FIG rules (one minute and four seconds), and the arbitration tribunal confirmed that the original score awarded to Chiles should be restored, meaning the North American would be demoted to fifth place.
