A yellow warning for hot weather in mainland Portugal will remain in effect until Monday in the districts of Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, Beja and Faro, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said on Saturday.
This Saturday, according to IPMA, an orange alert (the second most severe on a scale of three) has been issued for the counties of Portalegre, Évora and Beja, with a forecast of “very high maximum temperatures continuing.”
Another seven areas are under yellow warning this Saturday, the least serious being Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Setúbal and Faro, due to “the persistence of high maximum temperatures,” the institute responsible for the national meteorological service said.
According to IPMA, much of the country’s northern and central interior remains in the maximum fire risk zone this Saturday, as well as the Algarve municipalities of Monchique, Silves, Loulé, São Bras de Alportel and Tavira.
On Sunday, nine of the 18 areas of mainland Portugal are under yellow alert: Vila Real, Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Setúbal, Évora, Beja and Faro.
On Monday, the yellow alert will be extended in seven counties: Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, Beja and Faro.
In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the north coast, the mountainous areas and the south coast are under orange alert this Saturday, a situation that will continue until Monday, with the exception of the north coast, which will be under yellow alert from Sunday night until Monday, and from Saturday to Monday Porto Santo is under yellow.
In the Azores, the heat has triggered a yellow warning for the western, central and eastern groups of the archipelago from Saturday to Sunday.
A yellow warning is issued by IPMA whenever a risk situation exists for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation, and an orange warning is issued whenever a moderate or high risk meteorological situation exists.
