A landslide in Angola’s Huambo province has killed five people, injured three and left at least seven missing, a local police spokesman told Luse on Wednesday.
Martinho Kawita said the accident occurred on Monday when a group of young people, made up of women and men, were allegedly illegally prospecting for gold in a mining area in Ukuma municipality.
According to Martinho Cavita, the search continues to rescue people who remained at the scene, according to eyewitnesses.
A police spokesman in Huambo said defence and security agencies were working to combat the practice, “a phenomenon that is gradually gaining popularity” in the region.
“We have some outbreaks throughout the province, in this region in the west of the province, we also have some outbreaks in the outskirts of Cicala-Choloanga, in the eastern part of the province, and some outbreaks in the northern part, especially in the Bailundo region,” he explained.
The official stressed that this is the first recorded case this year that came to the attention of the police through local authorities.
In 2021, a similar landslide in Huambo killed 16 gold miners.
