Eight people have died in a road accident in the Angolan province of Huila.

Eight people were killed and burned alive in Angola’s Huila province on Friday after the car they were travelling in caught fire after colliding with a truck, according to the local fire service.

According to the commander of the Civil Protection and Fire Safety Service, Chief Inspector Eduardo Cabunguela, the alarm about the incident was received at around 10 a.m. on Estrada Nacional 280.

A person in charge who spoke to Angola Public Television said the accident involved a truck carrying containers and a taxi.

Eduardo Cabunguela stressed that eight wounded were rescued and taken to the Antonio Agostinho Neto Central Hospital.

Three people, including one policeman, were killed and four people were seriously injured when a National Police patrol vehicle overturned on National Road 230 in Malanje province, with two people arrested.

Road accidents are the second leading cause of death in Angola after malaria, and the figures are worrying authorities.

In 2023, Angola recorded 3,121 deaths and 17,902 injuries from 14,429 road traffic accidents.
