The Sao Martinho do Bispo church in Coimbra was robbed early on Monday morning.
The burglars broke into a side door of the church and a safe on the wall of the sacristy.
The amount of money stolen was about a thousand euros, but after Sunday’s celebration, gold coins and other items donated by parishioners were also stolen.
The parish committee members left the site at around 10pm on Sunday and when they returned to the church on Monday morning they noticed the robbery. They thought it was vandalism but soon noticed the sacristy safe had been broken into and the offerings were missing.
The PSP was alerted and collected evidence, which is now complete.
The church is now reopened and a new lock has been installed.
