Prime Minister Luis Montenegro on Wednesday wished the Portuguese athletes who will take part in the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris “a great day of sporting excellence” and wished them success in the relevant competitions.
In a message published on the X network, on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the Games, which is still taking place in Paris, Luis Montenegro addressed the 27 athletes who will represent Portugal from Saturday to September 8.
“As Prime Minister, I want to wish you a successful sporting journey and success in the competitions. I also want to send a hug of confidence and hope to all the athletes, all the technical specialists, the staff, the Paralympic Committee and the directors,” says Luis Montenguero in the message he left.
A government official insisted that athletes should have fun and “enjoy this unique moment that the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will be,” wishing everyone “good luck.”
The Portuguese mission in Paris includes 27 athletes who will compete in 10 of the 22 sports on the Paralympic programme.
Portugal’s 11th participation in the competition dates back to 1948, when neurosurgeon Ludwig Guttmann organised a sporting event for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries (in wheelchairs) in the English town of Stoke Mandeville.
