979 kilograms of shellfish caught in the Lima River in Viana do Castelo were seized.

The GNR Coastal and Border Control Unit (UCCF) seized 979 kilograms of shellfish and identified the captains of five vessels that caught the bivalves in the Lima River in Viana do Castelo, it was announced this Thursday.

In a statement sent to the editorial board, GNR said that “five vessels were fishing for bivalves in the Lima River, in a prohibited, uncontrolled zone, thus creating a danger to public health.”

The inspection action carried out by the Caminha Coastal Control Unit took place on Wednesday and was aimed at “monitoring compliance with the rules for the capture, keeping, transport and marketing of bivalve molluscs”, in this case clams (cerastoderma edule), resulting in the drawing up of five administrative offence reports.

The seized pupa was returned to its natural habitat as if it were alive.

“The Republican National Guard warns that the collection of this type of bivalves in an uncontrolled area could pose a threat to public health if they are consumed due to possible contamination with toxins,” the memo said.
