The PSP has identified a 58-year-old man and charged him with being the alleged driver of the car that fatally struck an 88-year-old woman in Evora on Tuesday, it was announced Friday.
A statement from the Evora Public Security Police (PSP) district headquarters said on Thursday that the Criminal Investigation Department identified “the driver of the vehicle involved” in the fatal collision.
Following a police investigation, since the collision took place on Estrada da Chania Street in the Bacelo district on Tuesday evening, “the person involved in the incident appeared at the Evora PSP police station” on Thursday.
A security source told Lusa that he was a 58-year-old man who was charged and later released on an identity and residence agreement.
An incident alert was issued at 8.47pm on Tuesday and the driver fled after the car hit an elderly woman.
That day, a source from the Subregional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection of Central Alentejo told Luce that the woman had been taken to the Évora hospital with serious injuries.
However, a source from the National Directorate of the PSP, who was also contacted by Lusa, added at the time that the elderly woman had died in the hospital ward.
According to a statement released this Friday by the PSP, “that same day, shortly after the incident, the Criminal Investigation Unit of Évora carried out an investigation at the suspect’s home based on the description of the vehicle.”
Despite this, it was not possible to identify the alleged suspect “immediately”, so contacts were established “in the following days to locate the vehicle used”.
The investigation ended with the man surrendering to the PSP, and “the car was found and seized to collect evidence and conduct further procedural actions.”
The clash, which occurred on Tuesday, led to the mobilization of 13 firefighters from Evora, the National Institute of Emergency Medicine and the PSP, supported by five vehicles, including an ambulance and resuscitation vehicle (VMER) from Evora.
