Pedro Nuno Santos asked Montenegro for “transparency” and rigor in state budget negotiations

In a letter sent to the prime minister in July, the Socialist secretary general asked for “transparent information on the budgetary outlook” for 2024 and 2025, warning that “transparency and rigor” were fundamental to the state budget negotiations.

“Although the proposed budget law must be presented to the Assembly of the Republic on October 10, the preparatory work of reflection and analysis begins much earlier and requires the provision of reliable information on the country’s budgetary situation. Only in this way will the Socialist Party be able to present its proposals in an informed manner, as well as assess the impact of the government’s options,” reads a letter sent by Pedro Nuno Santos to Luis Montenegro on July 29.

In the letter, to which Lusa had access this Friday, the PS leader stressed that “any dialogue or negotiation involves the exchange of transparent information on the budgetary prospects for 2024 and 2025.”

“Transparency and accuracy of information are fundamental prerequisites for the normal development of any dialogue,” he warned.

This letter, according to Pedro Nuno Santos, follows the PS’s “expressed willingness to begin a dialogue with the government on the 2025 state budget.”

Among the information requested by the PS leader are “a forecast for the development of the budget situation in 2024”, “a budget scenario for 2025 in an invariant policy” and “a multi-year framework for public spending”.

Expresso reported on Friday that Pedro Nuno Santos had written to Luis Montenegro and had already received a response.
