Four Faro shoplifting suspects identified via CCTV

The PSP identified four suspects in a crime related to aggravated theft at a commercial establishment in Faro, using images collected by a CCTV system that went into operation last Tuesday. It was published this Saturday.

The PSP statement stressed that this is the “first crime solved” using the system, which has a network of 41 cameras in 32 locations with the highest influx of citizens and traffic in the Algarve capital.

The burglary took place early on Friday morning, around 6am, at an establishment in the city centre, with the suspects, aged between 17 and 19, taking goods worth around 300 euros in addition to material damage, the value of which has yet to be determined.

“After reviewing CCTV images covering the area of the theft, four suspects were identified,” who were later identified early this morning in the Faro nightclub area and charged.

The video surveillance system in the city of Faro, implemented by the Faro City Council in collaboration with the PSP, which manages it 24 hours a day, was inaugurated last Tuesday.

The 32 locations where the cameras are installed were selected by PSP and are linked to the history of problems and complaints registered at the city’s ‘black spots’ with the aim of preventing crime and curbing traffic violations.

Of the total number of cameras, 27 were installed in shopping and nightclubs, and the remaining 14 were installed on six main roads in the city, operating continuously 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To ensure privacy, windows, doors and private spaces are ‘pixelated’, images will only be stored for 30 days, information is encrypted and images are only shared from the police to the prosecutor’s office.

Access to the system is limited to agents trained for this purpose, and image extraction is restricted to criminal investigation agents.
