Up to 12 areas are under yellow warning due to cold weather and snow

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) this Saturday raised the yellow warning areas from 11 to 12 due to the cold weather and snow forecast, also including Portalegre.

The IPMA has issued a yellow warning for the Portalegre area due to the forecast for “low minimum temperatures to continue” from 07:00 Saturday to 06:00 Tuesday.

Also under the yellow warning due to cold weather, which has now been extended until 06:00 Tuesday, are the areas of Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Castelo Branco and Aveiro.

These areas, as well as Porto, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Coimbra and Braga are also under yellow warning until 15:00 today due to the forecast of “snowfall above 600/800 meters, which can accumulate up to five cm” . [centímetros] over 800 meters.

A yellow warning, the least severe, is issued by the IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain weather-dependent activities.

The Institute warns of possible disturbances caused by snow accumulation and possible ice formation, such as air-conditioned or blocked roads, damage to buildings or trees, or disruption of local supplies.

IPMA predicts cold weather in the coming days with a drop in maximum temperature from 05 to 10 degrees Celsius due to air masses of polar origin.

For today, the forecast is torrential, snow in the mountains, strong winds in places in the highlands and the coastal strip of the southern region with the possible formation of sleet or frost, especially in the interior of the country.

According to IPMA forecasts, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Administration (ANEPC) has warned the public about the risks of inhaled gas poisoning due to inadequate ventilation and fires in homes as a result of misuse or malfunction of fireplaces and braziers. electrical circuits.
