The Ice Traders by Portuguese director Joao González won the Annie Award, Oscar of Animation, in the Best Short Film category, while Netflix’s Pinocchio de Guillermo del Toro won Best Film. .
The 50th Annie Awards, the most important in animated cinema in the US, took place on Saturday night (early this Sunday morning in Europe) in Los Angeles, California and also recognized Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio in the categories for Best character animation, best direction, best music and best design.
“Ice Traders” was nominated in the category “Best Short Film” along with “Amok” by Hungarian Balazs Thurai, “Black Hill” by Israeli Uri Lotan, “Love, Dad” by Czech Diana Kam Van Nguyen and “Flying Sailors” by Canadian Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby.
João González’s film is also up for the Oscars, which will be presented on March 12 for Best Animated Short Film, an unprecedented nomination for a Portuguese production.
The Ice Traders, João González’s third film, is about the loss and family ties between father and son and takes as its starting point the image of a mountain house perched on a cliff.
This short film, narrated with no narrator or dialogue, only drawn images and music, is a collaboration between Cola Animation and the UK and France.
The Ice Dealers had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Critics’ Week in France, where the film won an award. Since then, he has added several other awards in the context of festivals.
The film is currently being shown in Portuguese cinemas.
The Annie Awards, considered the “Oscars” of animated films, honor animated productions, short films and feature films, and are awarded annually by the International Animated Film Society.
In the Best Picture category, in addition to the winner Pinocchio de Guillermo del Toro, there were nominations for Pixar’s Blushing Strangely Red, Dreamworks’ Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Netflix’s The Sea of Beast and Wendell & Wild, produced by Monkeypaw and Gotham for Netflix.
Winners from 32 categories in the 50th edition of the Annie Awards include Marcel the Sink in Boots (Marcel the Movie LLC) for Best Independent Film and Boy, Mole, Fox and Horse (NoneMore and Bad Robot) for Best Special.
