The Department of Investigations and Criminal Affairs (DIAP) of Comarca of Coimbra, which covers the entire region, registered 106 domestic violence investigations in the month of January.
In a posting on its website, DIAP indicates that there were 24 more requests than in the same period in 2022, with 12 charges dropped.
As part of the ongoing proceedings, seven bans on contact with the victim and seven orders for eviction from the place of residence were issued in connection with the applied coercive measures.
“In the same period, an investigation was also conducted into the crime of attempted murder in the context of domestic violence, in which the defendant was subjected to forced preventive detention,” the DIAP stressed.
During January, 12 temporary suspensions of the process were also applied (the process does not move to a judgment through prescriptions, agreed rules that must be observed by the defendant).
According to DIAP, 111 cases of domestic violence were opened in the same month.
The new coordinator of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the District of Coimbra, Ana Simões, who took office in September 2022, emphasized that the field of domestic violence is very dear to her, highlighting the fact that Coimbra has a specialized unit for this type of crime.
At that time, the magistrate advocated the need for concentration and specialization of magistrates to respond to crimes of this type in several municipalities of Comarca.
