Angola has recorded 301 road traffic deaths this year, the second leading cause of death in the country after malaria, at five deaths per day, according to police figures.
According to Deputy Director General for Traffic and Road Safety, Deputy Commissioner Pinduki Marquez, statistics show that there were 990 accidents in January, resulting in 168 deaths and 1,152 injuries.
In February, 884 road accidents were registered in the country, as a result of which 133 people died and 952 were injured.
“There is no other message than the message of safe driving, this is driving in which, even with priorities, for example, when running a green light, I still have to pay due attention to other citizens who do not comply with the rules, and those who complies. I don’t know the rules,” Pinduka Marquez told Rádio Nacional de Angola.
In 2022, according to the National Police, there were 2,999 deaths and 15,693 injuries in Angola from 13,360 traffic accidents, which means an average of eight deaths and 43 injuries per day.
