State Ministry launches investigation into explosion at Campo Militar de Santa Margarida

The Attorney General’s Office (MP) has opened an investigation into the explosion that occurred on Thursday at Campo Militar de Santa Margarida, Santarém District, which killed one person and injured five, the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) confirmed this Friday.

“The initiation of an investigation has been confirmed. The same goes for the terms in the Abrantes DIAP section. [Departamento de Investigação e Ação Penal] de Santarém,” PGR said in response to Luce.

Also on Thursday, the army also announced the opening of an investigation into an “unintentional explosion” that occurred during an explosive disposal operation.

An “unintentional explosion” occurred around 4:40 p.m. during an explosive ordnance disposal operation conducted by the Ordnance, Explosives and Missile Disposal Team from Site 1 at around 4:40 p.m., the Army said in a statement.

This Friday, the communication service of the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra reported that the condition of the two soldiers, who are considered seriously injured in the explosion, is stable and will be transferred to another medical facility this Friday.

The explosion that took place on Thursday in Campo Militar de Santa Margarida in Constancia (Santarém) left one person dead, two seriously injured and three lightly injured, a source from the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (INEM) told Lusa.

According to the Sub-Regional Command of the Middle Tagus, the alert was received at 16:49 and 35 operatives, 12 vehicles and an INEM helicopter were sent to the scene (in the Santarém area).

An INEM source said that in addition to the helicopter, the institute mobilized two medical vehicles and seven ambulances assigned to firefighters.
