Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the nursing home in Lourinhao after reports of abuse came in on Sunday, the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) said Tuesday.
The information from PGR comes a day after Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security Ana Mendez Godinho announced an urgent inspection of the Delicado Raminho Nursing Home in Lourinhao.
Also on Monday, Ana Mendez Godinho was questioned by reporters about information disclosed by former home workers that they had received advance notice of welfare visits, replying: “There are of course regular visits and there are inspection visits and they are never announced and should not be announced precisely in order to detect marked situations.
Ana Mendez Godinho also called on Social Security to report any cases where people feel they need supervision.
“Here we have to control, protect people’s situations, which is what drives us,” he added.
On Monday afternoon, Rádio Renascença reported that two social welfare inspectors were on the premises to check the conditions of assistance to about 60 users of the institution.
The SIC report on Sunday evening condemned the mistreatment of the elderly at the home of Delicado Ramigno in Lourinhao, Lisbon district.
At stake, according to a former employee, are the use of the same gloves for multiple users, wounds that need to be treated, poor food made from leftovers from previous days, and no hot water for bathing users.
According to the disclosures, Delicado Raminho is privately owned, licensed to operate and can host up to 78 users, currently around 60. Each pays an average of 1,500 euros per month.
