The Ukrainian Football Federation (UAF) on Monday called on FIFA to exclude Iran from the 2022 World Cup, which will play from November 20 to December 18, alleging violations of human rights and military support for Russia with weapons.
The UAF is asking Iran to pull out of a competition that will see the Portuguese-led Carlos Queiroz take on England, the United States and Wales in Group B of the competition to be held in Qatar.
However, the UAF executive committee does not present the Ukrainian national team as a replacement for the Iranian one, contrary to the proposal of Shakhtar Donetsk last week.
On October 24, Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Sergei Palkin asked FIFA to replace Iran with Ukraine in the 2022 World Cup to punish the Asian country for its support of the Russian invasion through the supply of drones.
“While Iranian leaders are having fun watching their national team play at the World Cup, Ukrainians will be killed by Iranian drones and missiles,” Sergei Palkin said in a statement posted on social media.
FIFA has not commented on these proposals and does not normally suspend member associations due to national government military decisions.
The European Union has already approved sanctions against Iranian citizens and organizations for supplying Russia with kamikaze drones that were used to attack the civilian population of Ukraine, which Iran categorically denies.
The military offensive launched on February 24 has already forced more than 13 million people to flee – more than six million internally displaced and more than 7.7 million to European countries – according to the latest UN figures, which rank this refugee crisis as the worst in history. Europe after World War II (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion, justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security, was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing political and economic sanctions on Russia. .
The UN has presented 6,306 civilian deaths and 9,602 wounded as confirmed since the start of the war, emphasizing that these figures are much lower than the real ones.
