At least eight people have died as a result of Cyclone Freddie passing through Mozambique.

At least eight people have died as Cyclone Freddy passed through Zambezia province, according to preliminary data released on Monday by the Ministry of Health.

Of the total deaths, seven occurred in the city of Quelimane, the provincial capital, and one in the Mokuba district, Health Minister Armindo Thiago, Zambezia Province Health Minister, said, noting that these are preliminary data.

“There is also significant destruction of infrastructure,” Armindo Thiago stressed.

Cyclone Freddie has already lost strength and turned into a tropical storm, but heavy rain is still expected in central Mozambique until Wednesday.

This is the second time that the weather has hit the country since the first strike on February 24, which killed 10 people in a few days due to adverse conditions.

The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) has opened reception centers and in recent days has advised the population to leave dilapidated houses and coastal areas or areas that are usually prone to flooding.

Several areas of the city of Quelimane lack electricity and communications.

In addition to Mozambique, the cyclone also hit Malawi, killing 39 people in Blantyre, according to the city’s chief executive, quoted by The Associated Press.
