The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) has seized more than 10,000 bottles of fake sparkling wine in the Bairrada area of Aveiro district, the agency said on Monday.
The ASAE said in a statement that the €25,940 worth of sparkling wine was seized during an inspection operation aimed at preparing, distributing and selling wines in the Bairrada area.
During the operation, 10,854 bottles of champagne were seized from the business entity, taking into account the fact of bottling and labeling the wine, “without the wine making process taking more than 90 days, as defined by current legislation.”
However, according to the ASAE, the sparkling wine was ready to be commercialized as if it were a quality sparkling wine with special characteristics that mislead the consumer as to the method of making the sparkling wine.
“As a result, an appropriate administrative offense case was initiated for the fact that the wine was bottled and labeled as quality sparkling wine, and he was also ordered to withdraw from commercial circulation sparkling wine, which he had already sold under these circumstances, on the basis of punishment for committing a crime disobedience,” the same note says.
