The 23-year-old, who was awaiting a European arrest warrant for drug trafficking, was detained during a random road check, Coimbra’s GNR said on Tuesday.
The GNR Territorial Command of Coimbra said in a statement that the arrest was made last Saturday through the Cantanhede Territorial Post.
“After checking in Cantanheda, the guards discovered that the suspect had a valid European arrest warrant for drug trafficking, which led to his arrest,” he said.
Contacting the Lusa agency, a GNR source in Cantañeda explained that the young man, who lives in Portugal, “had a case with the judicial police of Leiria” related to drug trafficking between Portugal and Spain.
“During a random road check and checking the database, the military checked for a European arrest warrant and made an arrest,” he said.
According to the same source, the 23-year-old man lived in the municipality of Cantanhede in the district of Coimbra, although the official residence is Nazaré (Leiria district).
After attending the first judicial interrogation at the Judicial Court of Leiria, the young man was presented to the security forces in the area of residence three times a week.
