Berlusconi confident he’ll beat leukemia: ‘It’s hard, but this time I’ll get over it again’

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi acknowledged that leukemia is difficult to deal with, but assured that he would overcome the disease, as he had done at other periods of his life.

“It’s tough, but this time I’ll overtake again. Even in difficult and delicate situations, I managed to recover,” said Silvio Berlusconi, a leukemia patient and in intensive care, quoted by the daily newspaper Il Giornale in its edition this Friday.

The former prime minister and media mogul was on the phone with Augusto Minsolini, editor of the former Berlusconi family newspaper.

Berlusconi has been treated since Wednesday in the intensive care unit of Milan’s San Raffaele hospital for chronic leukemia and a lung infection.

The 86-year-old media tycoon is “well rested and responding well to his treatment,” Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told Rai 3.

Tajani is second in Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party, which is part of a coalition government led by Georgia Meloni.

Silvio Berlusconi, nicknamed “immortal” for his longevity in politics and re-elected to the Senate in 2022, is suffering from a lung infection linked to “chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, which he has been suffering from for some time,” according to his doctors.

Supporters of the Berlusconi football club “Monza” hung a banner at the gate of the hospital: “Courage, Silvio! Monza is with you.”

Former prime minister and senator Matteo Renzi (center), a longtime political rival of Berlusconi, tweeted a message of support on Friday morning: “Courage Silvio! We are waiting for you, smiling, in the Senate.”

Berlusconi, one of the richest men on the peninsula with a net worth estimated by Forbes at 6.4 billion euros, has been hospitalized in recent years.

The billionaire spent four days in the same hospital last month and was discharged a week ago.

Silvio Berlusconi entered politics in 1994 and was prime minister for a total of nine years. Despite a series of sexual scandals and lawsuits that tarnished his image, he retained a special place in the hearts of many Italians.
