Arsenal’s Europa League match against PSV Eindhoven has been rescheduled after the Metropolitan Police gave the north London club the green light.
Even this weekend’s Premier League, EFL and Major League matches were postponed after Queen Elizabeth II’s death on Thursday, as was Leeds United against Nottingham Forest on Monday.
There are also concerns about next weekend’s game, as the crackdown around the Queen’s funeral is likely to further disrupt the football calendar.
It also raised a question mark over the participation of Premier League teams in the European midweek competition, especially those playing at home.
But neither the government nor the police have any problem scheduling matches accordingly.
According to the Evening Standard, the London Metropolitan Police have told Arsenal they have no problem playing PSV in the Emirates on Thursday, with an official confirmation expected over the weekend.
Chelsea are also scheduled to face RB Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Manchester United are out so the match will not be affected.
Arsenal, West Ham and United all played their European games on Thursday night despite news of the Queen’s death, with UEFA canceling the match considering many fans had already arrived at the stadium. I insisted on moving on.
Most sports are suspended on Friday, but cricket, rugby, horse racing and other events will resume over the weekend under a decision to postpone football spearheaded by the Football Association, of which the Queen is patron.
Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said:
“As our longest reigning monarch, she is an inspiration and has left an incredible legacy after a dedicated life.
“This is a very sad moment not only for the country, but for the millions of people who admired him around the world, and we join all who mourn his passing.
