This Thursday, a Coimbra court sentenced a man to six years and six months in prison for fatally hitting a man while fleeing police on Avenida Fernando Magalhães. The crime was committed in the early morning of October 4, 2019.

The driver, in his 30s, was pulled over by PSP agents in connection with a surveillance operation. He was moving along the road at a speed of 90 kilometers per hour, when the maximum allowed speed was 50.

Violating the order of the authorities, the driver collided with a pedestrian and fled without providing assistance. The victim, aged 60, received multiple injuries and died.

The now detainee, who is drunk and under the influence of drugs, said that on the day of the crime he was celebrating, as he received the news that he would become a father.

The man’s friend was also in the car. According to the woman, she asked the driver several times to stop the car so that he locked the doors and increased speed.

The man was eventually intercepted by PSP officers around 4:00 am when he was close to his home.
